SPEAKER:

Maria Canter, M.D.

Dr. Canter is board certified in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery as well as Obstetrics & Gynecology.  She was one of the first surgeons in the country to be boarded with both specialties.  Her focus is on improving the quality of life for women by using minimally invasive techniques to treat vaginal prolapse, including prolapsed bladder, rectum and uterus.  She offers conservative options for treatment of urinary and fecal incontinence, as well as options for fecal incontinence surgery and urinary incontinence surgery. She believes in working with each patient to determine what works best for that patient and tailor treatment options accordingly.

Dr. Canter was born in Washington, DC, and grew up just outside of the city.  She graduated from Boston College Magna Cum Laude and as Scholar of the College with a degree in Biology.  Her summers were spent at the NIH Summer Student Program. It was there that she witnessed her first surgery and realized the potential for surgery to  impact quality of life. She returned home to go to Georgetown University School of Medicine where she decided to pursue a career in Women’s Health.  She completed a residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology at the Georgetown University Medical Center graduating with the Minimally Invasive Endoscopy Award.  A three year fellowship ensued in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery in Louisville, KY.  While in fellowship, she would complete a Master’s of Science in Clinical Investigation and graduate with the Academic Achievement Award and Achievement in Clinical Research Award.  She also received the prestigious American Urogynecology Society June Allyson Award for research in urine proteomics.

Dr. Maria Canter Urogynecology Center NoVa opened in May 2016. However, Dr. Canter has been in practice in Northern Virginia for over 10 years and is proud to say she loves what she does. When asked what attracted her to this field, she replies, “I have the privilege to take care of women.  I get to build a rapport with my patients, renew confidence and restore quality of life in women who usually take care of everyone else.”
